During the 1990s I painted a series of toy boxes, each commissioned for a particular child. Sturdily constructed as a place to keep toys, each box followed the same alphabetical structure - six letters on the lid, six each on the front and back sides, and four on each end to make the total of twenty-six. In each panel two or three objects were depicted, each beginning with the appropriate letter and wherever possible on a theme of special interest to the child. The inside lid was always a composition built around the letters of the child's name.
