Venice and Twickenham chest, 1991
|
This traditional Italian-style chest, reminiscent of the painted cassoni of the 16th century, was commissioned for the 60th birthday of a Renaissance scholar equally at home in Venice and Twickenham. The continuous scene around the outside of the box is a capriccio in which alternate views of Venice and Twickenham merge seamlessly. The seductive nude on the inside of the lid is the foreground figure from Titian's Venus of Urbino.
